The Grand Dame is inspired by Mexico's
La Calavera Catrina. Her face is carved agate and her hat is made of solid sterling flowers and leaves. The pendant is mounted on copper with an 18 inch copper chain.
Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada originally created La Calavera Catrina and her oversized flowered hat as a cultural and social dig at Mexican dictator Porfirio Díaz, whose accomplishments in modernizing and bringing financial stability to Mexico pale against his government's repression, corruption, extravagance and obsession with all things European. These privileged few were in direct contrast to the suffering of many in Mexico and lead to the 1910 rebellion that toppled Diaz in 1911 and became the Mexican Revolution.
